The Lorenzo Viani Municipal Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art is housed on the first floor of the Palazzo delle Muse in Viareggio.
The permanent collection of the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art consists of about 3,000 works coming mainly from private donations.
The original nucleus was established in 1979 with the purchase by the Municipality of Viareggio of 50 works by the artist Lorenzo Viani, which today, together with other acquired or donated works, constitutes the most important public collection of works by the Viareggio master, original exponent of European expressionism.
A strong boost to the collection was given by the Lucarelli Donation: 45 works by important Italian authors of the 1900s and by the Pieraccini donation, with around 2300 works mostly of European contemporary art.
A magic of colours and refined shapes welcomes visitors and the most consistent nucleus of the collection is made up of graphic works, the gallery is in fact one of the most important national exhibition centres specialized in this sector.
The Gallery also periodically hosts temporary exhibitions dedicated to contemporary art of the twentieth century.
